The Filipino American Association of Greater Columbia (FAAGC), South Carolina will be holding a screening of Chiara Cox´s  interviews with the Mangyan Heritage Center (Official) entitled “Mangyan Wisdom: A Glimpse into the Filipino Soul.” This documentary film explores the unique heritage of the Mangyan people of Mindoro and the significance of the Mangyan Writing Systems and Ambahan poetic chants to the collective Filipino identity.

There are only four indigenous Filipino scripts that have been in continuous daily use since the 10th century AD. These were inscribed in the UNESCO Memory of the World Programme. Of these four writing systems, the Hanunuo Mangyan have their “ambahan” (poetry/song) to provide us with details of the pre-colonial Filipino. Through interviews with key people in the Mangyan Heritage Center, this video sheds light on the script, poetry/songs, and philosophy of the Mangyan and what this means in terms of the Filipino soul and the future of civilization.

A discussion will be held afterwards with the video producer Chiara Cox and local Filipino Americans Che and Eric Vejerano who lived and worked as volunteers in Mindoro with the Mangyan tribe.

This event is sponsored by Richland Library ARTHALAND and South Carolina Humanities, a state program of National Endowment for The Humanities that provides funding to programs and projects supporting the humanities in South Carolina.

A brief video of an ambahan or sung poetry with their script, a chant, and the translation of a poem can be  found here:  https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=521160744186178
